LBUSD and LEAP

I recently read an article in the Harbor Happenings--a newsletter for Harbor Regional Center of which my daughter is a client. This state agency typically prides themselves in the advocacy of and provision of services to persons with developmental disabilities. They are considered a client's guide to a 'system' which includes a network of supports and information materials, the IEP process, and resource of services for people with special needs and their families.

This article was disturbing to me; especially when I read things like:

"A joint venture between Harbor Regional Center and the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) – LEAP offers children ages two three with autism an alternative to in-home or center-based programs"

"The child is also in a more natural environment for learning."

As if sticking a bunch of 2-3 years old into a special classroom for "autistic" children is a natural learning environment and preferable to being at home!!

"It also uses music extensively, with songs woven into many of the children’s activities. Occupational Therapy is provided at the school’s clinic twice a week, while speech activities are integrated throughout the classroom."

This says nothing of the quality of work. LBUSD is notorious for mediocre services, in my book. And it all leads to the "experts" thinking they know your child better than you! Families are better of sending their kids to a privately-run facility that really provide superior services--they have to because in the private sector, the Special Day Centers are competing with others.
