news from the front

We have a family in our homeschool group whose daughter is a Sgt. in the US Army. The following is an email from their daughter.

Dear family and friends,

Well, we are now entering the most holy time of the year for Muslims all over the world. It is now the "nights of Power" celebrations during the month of Ramada. And the Terrorist are in full swing demonstrating the "power" they have over the civilians, and the "occupational forces" that are here in Iraq. We had quite a spectacular fire works show last night here in Baghdad. The explosions rocked our buildings so hard we thought our entire base was getting attacked. Our company was attacked again, (the fourth time this week) and another six soldiers where injured. (Or wounded in action WIA as the military would put it) thankfully we have not lost another solider, well, as of yet anyway. Time here is at a stand still. We work, sleep and eat in a set pattern, much like those of you back home who work and go to church and school. The only real difference is we never know if we are going to make it though this day alive or not. We don't know if the explosion we just heard, or the shot that just flew by, took the life of another friend or acquaintance of ours. It's a strange feeling when a rocket hits in the same place you were standing only an hour ago. Just think if that rocket had hit an hour earlier?

I have often debated on how much information about the life over here I should talk about. I often only mention the weather, food, or sometimes how busy I was the night before. I wonder if the majority of the country understands that we as soldiers shield the unpleasant things about deployment and keep it to ourselves or others who have been through the same thing as us. We do this in order to protect those who we love back home from un-necessary worry and fear. However, perhaps by protecting our family we are not fully conveying the importance of keeping the entire situation over here in prayer. I know that many of you have children, work, school, boyfriends and girlfriends who are waiting to see you after a long day at work. Remember those of us who have chosen to fight for our country do not have the opportunity to visit our loves ones after a hard day at work. We don't have the option of seeing our boyfriend/girlfriend after a long week of working to catch those individuals responsible for the death of our friends. Yes this war has been going on for quite some time now, but it is still raging, and will be raging for a long time. Don't forget to pray for your country's leaders, for the leaders of this new nation, for the corruption that is here in Iraq. For the innocent people who are suffering at the hands of terrorists every day. And for your soldiers at war who continually strive to attain victory in a war against terrorists that can really never be won, at least not by man. And most importantly, please remember to pray for the families of the soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice and are no longer able to fight in this war.

I will be home soon. Only a few more weeks left before my time in country is up. Thank you all for your continued support. Don't' forget to remember.
