Huntington Library FREE day

Admission to The Huntington is free to all visitors on the first Thursday of every month with advanced tickets. Hours on Free Day are 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.


*On the 1st of the month, Call 800-838-3006 to reserve your tickets by phone, or reserve your tickets online selecting from two arrival times:

morning entry (10:30 a.m. - noon)
afternoon entry (1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.)
Once reserved, your paper ticket(s) will be mailed to you.

**Parking is free at The Huntington, and no parking reservations are necessary unless arriving by bus.

all non-member visitors to The Huntington on "Free Day" (the first Thursday of the month) must have a ticket.

Tickets are free and can be requested by calling our ticketing agency at 800-838-3006. You may also reserve your tickets online: selecting from two arrival times: morning (10:30 a.m.) or afternoon (1:30 p.m.). A limited quantity will be available the first day of each month preceding the month you wish to visit. (For example, if you wish to visit on October Free Day, you may call for tickets beginning Sept. 1). Please note that Free Day tickets are not available at The Huntington, and may only be reserved by phone or online.



How many tickets can I get?
You may request up to 5 tickets.

What are Free Day hours? On Free Days, hours are 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Can I bring a picnic? Food and picnicking is not permitted on the grounds. However, there is a small area adjacent to the parking lot where you may eat food you've brought before you enter. Dining is available in our cafe or tea room.

Do infants and toddlers need tickets? Yes, all non-member visitors need a ticket for Free Day.

On the first Saturday of each month, Nature Crafts are also offered near the Entrance Pavilion. No reservations required. Free with museum admission

Architecture and Furniture in a Chinese Garden
May 6 (Tuesday) 7:30 p.m.
A Chinese garden is a living space equipped with architecture and furniture. Sarah Handler, author of Ming Furniture in the Light of Chinese Architecture, will explore how these two arts function in the garden, merging with nature to create a unique world. Free. Friends’ Hall

Garden Talk: “Our Favorite Things”

May 8 (Thursday) 2:30 p.m.

Botanical staff members and volunteers will share their favorite picks from among the vast selection of plants at this year’s Annual Spring Plant Sale, coming up on May 18. (Note: there will not be a sale after this talk.) Free. Friends’ Hall

Engineering Hetch-Hetchy: Dams, Techniques, and Politics in Progressive-Era California
May 8 (Thursday) 7:30 p.m.

Trent Dames Lecture

Bruce Sinclair, past president of the Society for the History of Technology, will discuss the construction of the Hetch-Hetchy Dam in Yosemite National Park in the early 1900s and how, through the efforts of opponents such as John Muir and the newly created Sierra Club, it became a rallying cry for the national environmental movement. Steve Morgan, curator of the University of California Riverside Botanic Gardens, will share his expertise on the best ferns for Southern California gardens and how to use them to advantage in the landscape. A plant sale follows the program. Free. Friends’ Hall

Arabella Huntington: Her Passion for Collecting and the Burgeoning of an International Art Network

French Art Series

June 19 (Thursday) 6:30 p.m.

Shelley M. Bennett, senior research associate at The Huntington, will present the fourth and final lecture in the French art series, discussing how Arabella Huntington’s passion for collecting, honed by years of decorating fashionable residences in America and France, provides fascinating insight into the rise of the mega-collector and the international art dealer in America circa 1900. Cactus & Succulent Show and Sale
June 28–29 (Saturday–Sunday) 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Preview plant sale Friday, June 27, noon–4:30 p.m.

Hundreds of award-winning plants will be on view as the Cactus and Succulent Society of America presents its annual show and sale. Many rare plants from around the world will be showcased, including specimens native to Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Botswana, Madagascar, and the Middle East. Free. Friends’ Hall

Children’s Day Celebration

May 4 (Sunday) 1:30–3 p.m.

Preschool students in colorful kimonos will sing songs from Japan in celebration of Children’s Day. Origami crafts and storytelling will round out this event. General admission. Japanese House

Huntington Explorers 2008

Have you registered yet for the Huntington Explorers? This popular summer camp for kids returns July 28–Aug. 15. Check online for class schedules and availability. But hurry! Classes are filling up fast. (Sorry, no phone or walk-in registration.)
